Google Images v Creative Commons

When you search for a picture using Google Images it is more than likely that you are stealing someone elses work and then, by putting it on your blog you are claiming that it is your own work.

At the least you should be including details about where the picture was from and who made it. But really, you should be seeking permission from the owner of the image to use their work.

Watch a short video about copyright and creative commons. Link

Instead use pictures that have been licensed as 'creative commons'. Try this search engine for finding them: link

As well as images, you can find movies, audio and the written word that have been licensed as creative commons.

This link has a list of a large number of sites to find CC media.

It's Delicious!

One of the frustrating things about using a web browser at school is that you can't add favourites to it or that you can't access those favourites anywhere else.

Delicious is a social bookmarking website.

This means that you can add favourites to one place that are stored on-line and therefore accessible from anywhere that has a web browser and internet access.

It is a "social" bookmarking site because you can find pages that have been added by other people who share your interests - you can use their expertise and knowledge to find web sites that could be useful to you.

While Delicious is a socail bookmarking web site, it is not social in the same way that facebook or myspace is - this makes it a safe place to be. Well, as safe as using any search tool eg Google.

However, I would suggest that you use a nickname that doesn't reveal who you are or where you live and that the same rules aply as to staying "safe" on-line. If you are concerned about using your last name (which it requires) then use a made up, but sensible name eg Smith, Jones or others that are very common.

Sign up to Delicious and use it to add the following web sites and then some that you regularly use:

  • your blog page
  • your 43things site
  • the 7P blog homepage

School of Life Comic

By now you would have had some discussion about the video, written a post on your reflections and completed a written response to what you think could happen next.

The next step is to share your ideas in groups of about four.

Then, using the comic template, plan a comic version of what you think will happen next - keep in mind locations where the action happens.

Once your plan is completed, you need to take photos, where you are the actors, of each panel of your comic.

The photos will be uploaded to the network and reduced in size. Then you will need to use befunky.com to colorize them and save them to your directory.

The final step is to put the new versions of the photos into the ComicLife template, add speech bubbles and export your comic.

The comics will be uploaded to your blog once completed.

Week 4 Task

Follow the steps listed for this week's task.

1) Watch the following video schooloflife.mp4

2) Discuss, as a class, your immediate response to the video; what was ironic about the story; and what might happen next.

3) Make a new blog post and write a paragraph of your thoughts about the video - use ideas from the discussion.

4) The next part is to be completed off-line, using a word processor or pen and paper:

- consider the two (or is it three?) main characters in the video and the events that have happened

- choose the point of view of one of the characters, and write about what you think could happen next.
